Integrating English language training in the vocational and work context

With Philida Schellekens

The aim of this session is to explore practical ways of teaching language in the work and vocational training context.

We will reflect on:

  • the perceptions of vocational and language teachers, employers and learners of the language skills required to function in training and work
  • the language skills that are key to effective communication in the workplace
  • the relevance of general ESOL and EFL curricula in the work and training context
  • aspects to look out for when planning work-related training

Dr Philida Schellekens is an internationally recognised consultant, author, teacher and teacher trainer, with a special interest in language in the workplace. Philida advises UK bodies, such as the British Council and CILT, the UK standards setting body, on occupational language standards.  Philida has published widely on English language teaching, and wrote the best-selling Oxford University Press ESOL Handbook (2007). At the ‘chalkface’, she is an inspector for English and foreign language teaching in classroom and vocational settings.  She continues to teach part-time at her local college.

Who is this for?

All EFL/ESOL teachers (newly qualified to experienced).
